WARD 23 MILTON KEYNES UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL MURAL
I was commissioned to design a mural for Ward 23 at Milton Keynes University Hospital.
There are 10 individuals panels that run around the wards central nurses station and frame the entrances to the individual patient bays. The panels were designed after holding workshops with the staff and patients of Ward 23 and aim to evoke memories and stories of Milton Keynes and it’s surrounding area. Ward 23 is a busy emergency orthopaedic ward with an average age of 83. Many of these patients suffer from dementia and find their new surroundings disorientating. The mural provides a distraction from their daily worries and engages them in conversation with both staff and their families whilst increasing their mobility by encouraging them to take a walk around the mural. The mural also serves as a distraction for the patients family members, carers and visitors who may spend many hours on the ward visiting.
